Voting Tips
The greatest thing to look for in any candidate or judge running for office is their character and what is dear and close to their heart. There is no perfect candidate because nobody is perfect; we can look in the mirror and confirm this. However, there are people who are open to God and seeking after His heart. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can discover these people and vote for them.
- Do some research of your own to find out the philosophy and character of those running for office. Some suggested places to visit: American Family Association; Concerned Women for America; Alliance Defense Fund; Family Research Council; National Right to Life. You can also Google a candidate’s name in order to find their website for more information or call their campaign headquarters directly.
- According to Exodus 18:21, you and I should …choose able men from all the people—God-fearing men of truth who hate unjust gain—and place them over [others]…. In addition to being experienced and equipped for the job, it is just as important if not more important that they hold to a biblical worldview. In other words, they are not a Christian in name only; their actions and voting record support Scripture more than go against it.
- Choose candidates/judges that are PRO-LIFE. How important is being PRO-LIFE? Jesus says in John 14:6 that He is the way, the truth and the LIFE. Knowingly or unknowingly, if someone is PRO-LIFE they are PRO-Jesus. If someone is PRO-DEATH [for abortion], they are against Jesus. Period.
- Which candidate/judge’s character [their voting record, their friends and associates] best reflect godliness? Vote for them and encourage others to do so.
- Which candidate/judge has a consistent voting record for legislation that is pro-life, pro-family, and pro-God? Give them your vote and tell others about them.
- Which candidate, judge, proposition, etc. is open to and promotes the fruit of God’s Spirit [Galatians 5:22,23] and the advancement of His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven? Vote for them and encourage others to do the same.
- Share the information that you found with others (anyone who is open and will listen).
- Help someone you know who is elderly or physically challenged get to the polls on voting day.
- Consider financially backing a candidate or cause you feel in your heart God is with. You could volunteer to make phone calls, put up signs or go door to door to promote them.
- Lastly, ask the Lord to show you who He wants you to vote for. Remember, He always leads us by peace (see Colossians 3:15). In Psalms 25:12 the Word says that those who reverently fear the Lord …God will teach him how to choose the best (TLB). By all means, don’t not vote. Indirectly, that is a vote for the unrighteous.
“Let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for yourselves rulers, ‘just men who rule in the fear of God.’ The preservation of a republican government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty; if the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted; laws will be made, not for the public good, so much as for the selfish or local purposes; corrupt or incompetent men will be appointed to execute laws; the public revenues will be squandered on unworthy men; and the rights of the citizens will be violated or disregarded. If a republican government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be becsue the citizens neglect the divine commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the laws.”
